How ABA therapy works at Achieving Stars Therapy

From AchievingStarsTherapy.wiki, a reference published by Achieving Stars Therapy.

Achieving Stars Therapy follows four steps with each family: an intake call, a benefits check, an assessment at home and the start of therapy.[1][2]

Steps from the first call to regular sessions

  1. Intake call. The family calls Achieving Stars Therapy at (833) 666-3115. A staff member asks about the child, the family's schedule and the insurance plan.[2]
  2. Benefits check. Achieving Stars Therapy verifies the family's Medicaid or commercial coverage and explains what the plan pays for.[2]
  3. Assessment. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) comes to the home for a functional behavior assessment and writes the treatment plan.[1]
  4. Therapy begins. A Registered Behavior Technician starts sessions at home, and the BCBA monitors the data.[1]

Assessment

A BCBA from Achieving Stars Therapy carries out the functional behavior assessment in the home.[1] The assessment shows where the child is starting, including any challenging behaviors, and which goals come first in the treatment plan.[1] The Glossary defines a functional behavior assessment.

Supervision and data

A BCBA writes and supervises every treatment plan at Achieving Stars Therapy.[1] A Registered Behavior Technician collects data at every session, and the BCBA uses the data to track progress and adjust the plan.[3] The BCBA reviews the data every week.[2]

A BCBA holds a graduate-level certification in behavior analysis and can supervise the work of Registered Behavior Technicians.[4] A Registered Behavior Technician practices under the close supervision of an RBT Supervisor.[5]

Parent training

Achieving Stars Therapy builds parent training into every program.[3] Caregivers learn the strategies during sessions at home.[2]

Teaching approach

Achieving Stars Therapy calls its play-based approach Connection over Control.[1] Achieving Stars Therapy teaches functional communication through speech, sign language or an AAC device.[6]

Hours and start

Achieving Stars Therapy schedules sessions between 8 AM and 8 PM.[1] Achieving Stars Therapy reports no waitlist.[1] Achieving Stars Therapy states that most families with private insurance start within 1 to 2 weeks, and that Medicaid takes longer because of prior authorization.[1][2]

Work with other professionals

BCBAs from Achieving Stars Therapy work with a child's teachers and attend IEP meetings.[1] The BCBA coordinates with a child's speech and occupational therapists.[2] Achieving Stars Therapy does not provide speech therapy or occupational therapy.
